A multi-talent lineup of New York artists are set to join internationally acclaimed poet, Ainsley Burrows for a press reception and special performance at the Shrine World Music Venue in Harlem, New York on Tuesday, March 18 to mark the release of EVOLVER, his fifth full-length album. Among those joining Burrows are Sprala Swa, Ming, Faro-Z and Loose whom also perform on the new release. The reception gets underway at 6:30 pm followed by the performance at 7:30pm.
With each of the classic ten tracks of, “EVOLVER,” standing on its own merit, Burrows applies his skills of wit, charm and compelling themes to lyrics which declare his concerns for life, humanity, love and war. Before audiences at festivals, cafés and institutions from Europe and
America, to Canada and the Caribbean, and via workshops from London’s Hackney Community College to New York’s Juilliard School of Music, Burrow’s talent has attracted noteworthy international attention and garnered awards:
- Best International Performer of 2001 and 2002 from the Farrago Poetry Café in London
- Munich’s International Poetry Slam Championship award in 2001
- Two awards from the Nuyorican Poet’s Café in New York (one in 2001 for participation in the National team and the other in 2004 as Coach of the National team.
On EVOLVER, Burrows raises the proverbial bar with socio-political musings softened by hypnotic pulsating rhythms, up-tempo beats and creative arrangements. The release is not to be mistaken for a standard spoken word album; the content spares no group its appraisal as it grips listeners with mind-boggling poetry and deft delivery.
Vocal performances of sensually stimulating Sprala Swa on Torres and Freedom, as well the ethereal vocal stylings of Ming on Unplugged and Baby, are complemented by outstanding deliveries by in your face rapper, Faro-Z on Black Boy and Dancehall artist, Loose on Gypsy Eyes. The melodious voice of South African singer, Masauko Chipembere sweetens Slow, and the powerful delivery of poet Tshaka Campbell bodes well on Drug Dealer.
A radical departure from the routine, Burrows exposes what happens when great poetry meets great music in an outstanding production effort. The quality collaboration on EVOLVER make it a powerhouse album; its masterful arrangement and clean production promises to become a guidepost for young poets the world over.
