Andrew Tosh, whose father helped bring the Reggae sound and
consciousness from Jamaica to the world, begins a 40-city U.S. tour in
April along with The Tosh Band and Northern California’s Reggae
Angels.
The tour — “Reggae Mylitis Salutes Peter Tosh” — is a tribute to
Peter Tosh. Peter, along with Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer, formed
Reggae’s first great vocal trio in 1962 which helped popularize and
spread the Reggae message.
The tour will premiere Andrew’s latest release, “Andrew Sings Tosh He
Never Died,” a tribute to his father. This new cd was produced by
Bunny Wailer, and will be released April 20 and available on the tour.
Andrew is a strong man like his father with a natural talent for
singing. Destined to Reggae greatness, (his mother is Bunny Wailer’s
sister) his singing ability has been recognized since he was a youth
in school. He has been the Tosh torchbearer since his father’s passing
in 1987, immediately doing a U.S. tour with his father’s band “Word,
Sound and Power.” Andrew previously released “The Original Man”
(Observer/Attack 1987), “Make Place for the Youth,” (Tomatoe 1989) and
“Message From Jah” (Dressed To Kill 2000).
“I’ve been singing away my heart since basic school,” say Andrew. “I
tell myself that Peter Tosh is gone and it’s my need to carry on. Not
for want, and not for lust of fame and glamour and want to be rich.
No, for the love of my art and the love of my people, because love
carry no color. Love is love and that’s what Jah say, make a joyful
noise unto Me.” nextOf his father he sings:
“1 said he died — because of vanity. The brothers they didn’t show no
love for humanity.
Now he’s gone — his children behind and I want you to know — Granny
still a cry. He fought for equal rights — he fought for justice — he
fought for humanity — he fought for unity. He was the only child for
his mother.”
From the San Francisco Bay Area, The Reggae Angels have been touring
nationally for eight years and have one of the most prolific
catalogues of any American based Reggae band, including 12 cds and
numerous dubs. The Angels’ latest release “Balance” is a strong effort
from beginning to end. A new project, “Make Blessings” is near
completion.
The Reggae Angels tour regularly throughout the western U.S. and
Canada, and fans of Reggae know the Angels deliver high energy
performances with an uplifting, happy sound and a conscious, spiritual
message. The Reggae Angels have backed some of Reggae’s best,
including Don Carlos, Horace Andy, Michael Rose, Big Youth, The
Abyssinians, Edi Fitzroy, Bernard Collins, Carlton & The Shoes, Junior
Murvin and Clinton Fearon.
