Three weeks into his first solo United States tour, Julian Marley has a lot of support in his corner – namely, his brother Stephen.
â€ÂIt’s one hand watch the other,†Julian Marley said in a phone interview Tuesday from Salt Lake City. “It’s a family of music, and it’s good to keep it together.â€Â
Stephen’s joining Julian on tour is just the latest example of the cooperative nature of the Marley boys, who stagger their album’s release dates to make sure they aren’t in direct competition with each other. When Stephen set out on his Mind Control tour in April 2007, he was joined by brother Damian, whose 2005 album Welcome to Jamrock had been setting the Reggae world ablaze for two years. Damian’s joining Stephen on the tour provided support, companionship and a major ticket draw.
Now, with Mind Control having nabbed the 2008 Best Reggae Album Grammy award, it’s Stephen’s turn support Julian as the special guest at his shows. And, when the show rolls into Eureka for a show Sunday at Nocturnum nightclub, the brothers will find themselves in familiar surroundings, as they have been playing shows in Humboldt County for more than a decade.
â€ÂThat is like a home for us, you know,†Julian Marley. “My guitarist also comes from there, so we know Eureka well.â€Â
That’s right – when Julian and Stephen Marley take the Nocturnum stage, they will have a North Coast native up there with them.
