New Reggae songstress Denyque Dontre (De-ni-que) released her first single ‘Can’t Breathe‘ on management company label, Arrows Records recently. The Reggae/Rock hit single has since been getting heavy rotation on the local air waves and has equally become a popular single in the streets. At the turn of the millennium many local Reggae artistes with strong love for unpopular genres such as Rock and Pop music have taken bold steps towards introducing their special music mix (usually a combination of Reggae/Dancehall blended with the genre they prefer) to the Jamaican public. Tessanne and Tammy Chin are some of whom did the unthinkable and brought to the fore their unique mixture of Reggae and Rock or Pop music successfully.
Cultural differences and language barrier could have been two probable causes for the perceived lack of interest in certain genres by the Jamaican grass-root (man in the street) audience even though Jamaican artistes overseas developed their own genres in the same manner, example the UK jungle now Dub-Step a mix of electronica, dancehall and hip-hop, to suit their respective target markets. Over the years, contestants in various national competitions, who favours unpopular genres emerge as winners and in all or most cases garner votes through public text messaging services.
The very eloquent Denyque Dontre who speaks French fluently, has positively impact the industry with her very distinctive, smooth and sexy sound on her very hot “Can’t Breathe” single, sending a clear signal that with a little interpretation and her own Jamaican twist, good music is always acceptable in Jamaica.
Rock and Pop music are highly favoured genres worldwide and sells millions of unit annually. In 1994 Canadian Rock artiste Alanis Morisette, working with US label Maverick Records, released “an emotionally raw collection of songs that introduced her to the world and sold over 30 million units worldwide”. Alanis was then nominated for the best Rock Album with popular singles, “You Oughta Know’, “Head over Feat”, “Hand in my pocket” and “Ironic”. Her album became the best selling debut album by a female artist in the U.S. and the highest selling debut album worldwide. Like Morissete, Denyque has something to say in her own distinct way and this multi-talented artiste is confident that her current fans and prospects will be eagerly breathing in, her every note.
