Singer Barbee is stepping out and taking a more business- like approach to her music, having recently established her own studio in Harlem, New York (USA).
While a number of female artistes have taken on businesses, when THE WEEKEND STAR spoke to Barbee recently while she was in New York, she said she wanted to step out of the box, opening her own music studio, Rare Diamond.
She said, “The whole vibe of my studio is to bring a rare Caribbean vibe and culture to New York city. The studio is on 125th street in Harlem. I came up with the idea when trying to figure out what type of business to open. I have an interest in hair and clothes but I wanted to be different so a studio seemed like a good idea.”
For the singer, who was born in New York City to a Nigerian father and a Jamaican mother, her studio is a home base for her future musical endeavours. Equipped with offices, a mixing room and a rehearsal room, according to Bar-Bee, she plans to work on her own craft at the studio but to also open its doors to new talent as well. “We’ve just started, really, so we’re taking things day by day, contacting different producers to work with us and we’re getting a good response. I really want to make this a world project, to do all different types of music at the studio,” she said.
The singer has also been busy promoting her latest video for Feel So Good, which was produced by Dean Fraser. The video was shot in Jamaica and, according to Barbee, she did most of the designing for the shoot.
