With just six weeks to go before SNWMF 2007, here are the latest runnings regarding this year’s festival:
Additional Artists Announced
The lineup for SNWMF 2007 is just about complete. Since our last update, the following artists have been confirmed to perform at this year’s festival:
Sugar Minott – There may be no single individual responsible for the success of the “dancehall” style of reggae that emerged out of Jamaica in the late 70s and early 80s, but the works of Sugar Minott were clearly instrumental in that movement. His “Youth Promotion Sound System” embodied the new direction the music was taking, and offered a greater variety of live performances than any other sound of the time, showcasing a crew of regular performers numbering in the dozens. Sugar has already graced the stage of SNWMF on several occasions, including bringing his Youth Promotion Sound System with him in 2005. His addition again this year will only make for a more epic lineup.
Bob Andy – Joining us this year will be singer and songwriter extraordinaire; Bob Andy, co-founder of the vocal trio “The Paragons”, best known for their string of hits for Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One. Bob served as a leading composer and arranger, working closely with Jackie Mittoo to help develop the Studio One “sound”, before leaving Studio One to concentrate on his own career spanning over 4 decades. Those years included hit recordings with his partner Marcia Griffiths, and an international songwriting and singing career. Over the course of his career he has composed and sang a range of material, from groundbreaking politically and socially charged songs to tender love ballads, always with the feeling and soul that has become his trademark.
Wadi Gad – Veteran drummer and recording artist Wadi Gad has been in music business for over three decades. During his enduring career he has worked with and drummed for many greats in reggae music including Horace Andy, Abyssinians, Big Youth, U Roy, Mikey Dread, John Holt and Jimmy Riley. Wadi Gad will be backing several of the roots reggae artists scheduled to perform this year as well as performing his own original set.
Fire Pashon – There is now a female progeny of a prominent performer making her mark on the scene as an artist – Fire Pashon, the daughter of Reggae music legend Lincoln “Sugar” Minott. Fire Pashon has a new CD out on the Black Roots label called Flames that is currently getting a lot of play. Fire Pashon accompanied her father to SNWMF 2005, and she has agreed to return once again to bless the people with her musical fire.
¡LoCura! – The ¡LoCura! sound weaves together Reggae and Flamenco, hence the flavor is ‘reggalicious flamenkito’. Bridging the Old World with the New, ..¡LoCura!.. is original music for the Heart and Soul. ¡LoCura! features vocalist Kathy Miletich, whom many of you may recognize from her years performing with Alma Melodiosa.
